a licensed trauma therapist in Arizona helping high-functioning people break free from survival patterns like people pleasing, burnout, and emotional overwhelm. I specialize in attachment wounds, CPTSD, and nervous system healing using EMDR, somatic therapy, and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.
EMDR sessions have a reputation. People either think their first appointment is going to be intense and overwhelming, or they have no idea what it’s about and just know someone told them to try it. There’s not a lot of in-between and most of what’s out there doesn’t help. It either sounds overly clinical or so vague that it doesn’t answer the one thing people actually want to know, which is: what is this going to feel like for me?
This post walks you through the entire process, from your first consultation call to your first few EMDR sessions. You’ll know what each phase looks like, how long things take, and what it feels like along the way so you don’t walk into your first appointment wondering what you signed yourself up for.And if you want the full breakdown of how EMDR works, you can read that in my post on what EMDR therapy is.
If you’ve been in therapy before and found it helpful but feel like you’ve hit a wall, EMDR might be worth looking into. Talking through your history is useful, but at some point you might notice that understanding where your anxiety or your people pleasing or your anger comes from hasn’t actually changed how you react to your partner when you feel criticized, or how you shut down at work when you’re overwhelmed, or why you keep ending up in the same dynamic with people even though you can see it happening.
It might be a good fit if:
You don’t need a single clear traumatic memory to point to either. A lot of people I work with are dealing with the slower stuff, years of feeling like too much or not enough, relationships where they lost themselves, growing up in a home where emotions weren’t really allowed.
And you don’t need to have it all figured out before you reach out. Coming in with a general sense that something feels off is enough to start a conversation about whether this is a good fit.
The free consultation is very low key. It’s a 15-minute call where we’re basically just getting to know each other. I’ll ask you some questions about what’s been going on and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy, and you’ll get a sense of how I work and whether it feels like a good fit for you. Nobody is making any decisions on that call, it’s just a starting point.
When most people picture EMDR they go straight to the eye movements, but that’s actually pretty far into the process and the early sessions look a lot different than that. If you read my post on what EMDR therapy is, you know there are eight phases, and the first few sessions are really focused on two things: building your capacity to handle deeper processing, and building enough trust between us that you actually feel safe doing it. And unlike talk therapy, the goal is never to have you relive your past trauma, because repeatedly going back to the hardest moments of your life without the right support in place can make things worse, not better.
The early sessions are structured to help us understand your history, what’s been going on for you, and what you want your life to look like on the other side of this. We also start working on your ability to stay grounded when emotions get intense, because that capacity matters a lot before we go into deeper processing. Your nervous system needs to feel stable enough to go to harder places and getting it there is intentional and takes time.
Part of what we’re doing in those early sessions is establishing that you can bring all your grief, anger, and overwhelm, and I can hold it with you. If you’ve spent a long time keeping all of that to yourself then getting comfortable with not having to do that anymore doesn’t happen overnight. Building that trust is something I give real time and space to.
This preparation phase can take a few weeks or a few months depending on what you need, and there’s no set timeline because everyone comes in with a different history and a different nervous system.
Once your nervous system feels stable and we’ve built enough trust between us, we start getting into the actual reprocessing. We’ll identify which experiences we’re going to focus on, what you believe about yourself because of them, and how they show up in your body right now. From there we move into bilateral stimulation, which is the eye movements or handheld buzzers you’ve probably heard about.
Your job during this phase is pretty simple, you’re just noticing what comes up while the bilateral stimulation runs. I’m paying attention to what’s happening in your body at the same time because trauma shows up physically just as much as it does emotionally.
We always make sure you’re in a good place before you leave, so we’re not ending a session while you’re still in the middle of a triggering memory. If you’ve been sitting with the feeling that talk therapy has taken you as far as it can and you’re ready to try something that works differently, a free 15-minute consultation is a good place to start. I work with clients in person in Gilbert, Arizona and virtually for anyone based in Arizona. We’ll talk about what’s been going on for you, whether EMDR makes sense, and what working together would actually look like. Schedule your free consultation here.
EMDR continues working even between sessions. Your brain keeps processing after you leave, so it’s pretty common to notice dreams, emotions, or old memories surfacing in the days after an appointment. You might feel tired after your first few sessions, or emotionally tender, or sometimes lighter than you expected. All of that is a normal part of the process and worth paying attention to.
At the start of each session we check in on how the week went and what came up for you, because what happens between sessions is just as relevant as what happens during them. If something felt significant I want to know about it, and will factor that into how we approach the session.
Every session is also tailored to where you are when you walk in. If you come in depleted or dysregulated we’re not going to push into harder material, we’ll work with what your nervous system can handle right now.
It really depends on you. Some people feel ready to move into deeper processing after a few weeks, and for others it takes a few months. There’s no set timeline because everyone comes in with a different history and a different nervous system, and we don’t move forward until you feel genuinely ready.
That’s actually really common, especially with attachment trauma or emotional neglect. You don’t need clear memories to benefit from EMDR. We can work with what’s showing up for you right now, how you respond in relationships, what sets you off, what you believe about yourself, because your body holds onto experiences even when your mind doesn’t have a clear picture of them.
A lot of people feel tired after their first few sessions because processing takes a lot out of you. Some feel emotionally tender, some feel lighter than they expected. Your brain continues processing between sessions so you might notice dreams or emotions coming up over the next few days. We always check in at the start of your next session to see what’s been coming up for you.
Both options are available. I offer in person EMDR therapy in Gilbert, Arizona and virtual sessions for anyone based in Arizona. The bilateral stimulation works the same way in both formats, either through guided eye movements on screen or using handheld tappers at home.
The free consultation is the best place to figure that out. We’ll talk about what’s been going on for you, whether EMDR makes sense, and what starting would actually look like for you.
Knowing what to expect before you walk into your first EMDR session makes the whole thing feel a lot less daunting. If you came into this post not really knowing what EMDR looked like in practice, hopefully you’re leaving with a clearer picture. The whole process is designed to meet you where you are and move at a pace that feels right for you.
